Why securemycreditreport.org?

We have created this website because we believe that you should be empowered to protect your personal credit information. In the end, it is your information and it is you who suffers when someone steals your identity. Specifically, if you want to freeze your credit report, it should be your right to do so.

What is happening & what are we doing?

The Financial Data Protection Act (H.R. 3997) is currently being revised by the House of Representatives. As it stands, it will 1) limit the ability for consumers to freeze their credit report [learn about the specifics] and 2) limit the notification of consumers when the security of their personal information is breached [learn about the specifics].

We would like to petition congress to grant all consumers the right to freeze their credit report and to ensure that consumers are notified of a security breach involving their personal information.

How you can help

We would encourage you to write your Senators and your Representatives directly about your concerns with the Financial Data Protection Act. Many personalized letters from their constituents will make them look at the subject more seriously.

We are also collecting signatures online for a formal petition. We want to show Congress that there is a significant number of people who want to change the Financial Data Protection Act to give consumers the power to freeze their credit reports and force organization handling personal information to report security breaches.
